Summer fun speech and language activities

During the summer months it's easy to lose touch with keeping up with speech and language at home. These five activities offer creative and fun ways to integrate speech into summertime play.

1. Beach Bingo

Going to the beach is a great way to spend time with your family over the summer. When you can't make it there, however, bring the beach to your home with beach bingo! Switch off who reads the cards to work on both matching and reading with your kids.

2. Pretend Play
The possibilities are endless for summer pretend play. Have your child run a pretend lemonade stand, restaurant, or ice cream truck. Through this they can work on the use of thinking, language, and social skills while problem solving and using their imagination.

3. Paint Chip Scavenger Hunt
Kids of all ages love scavenger hunts! This paint chip scavenger hunt is a fun game that gets your family outdoors and something your little, and not-so-little-ones, can participate in. This type of scavenger hunt is also a great way to work on color recognition and problem solving.

4. Kool Aid Play Dough
What better way to add sensory play to your child's summer than to make play dough - that you can eat! Although kool aid play dough may not taste the best, it is a much safer, home-made alternative to the play dough you can buy. Have your kids help in the cooking process to work on following directions - and then enjoy the soft, squishy result!

5. Have a Picnic
What better way to enjoy a nice summer day than to have a picnic! Have your kids help out with the prep work by making a list of what they want to eat, making their own sandwiches, or even setting up a space outside. Remember to have fun and enjoy the great outdoors with the kiddos!
